Wii U version of ‘Project CARS’ cancelled
Speaking to Nintendo Life, Bell explained the game may one day make its debut on Nintendo’s new NX system but, as it stands, the Wii U simply can’t handle it.
The project’s canning follows a long battle with the Wii U’s hardware which ultimately resulted in an unplayable 23FPS, even at 720p.
The team were hoping that Nintendo might announce some new hardware at E3, but, as those of you who haven’t been living under a rock for the last month will know, there was nothing.
“As of now Project Cars is simply too much for the Wii U”, studio boss Ian Bell told website Nintendo Life.
Shifting gear to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One inevitably took the build too far out of reach, so that was likely the undisclosed death knell for Project CARS on Wii U.
The developer at the time suggested that the game might have to be delayed until Nintendo’s next console, the codenamed Nintendo NX. He wrote that the game ran at 23 fps at 720p on Nintendo’s console, a far cry from the gorgeous visuals present in versions of the game on other platforms.
Somewhat contradictory to today’s news, creative director Andy Tudor had once said that “the Wii U is more than capable of providing the core Project CARS experience”.
The Wii U version of the crowd-funded racing sim, Project Cars, has been scrapped entirely according to developer Slightly Mad Studios.
‘Honestly, unless we really cut the looks back I think we’re looking to Nintendo’s next console, ‘ said Bell back in May. Publisher Namco Bandai has not commented on the matter.
