Wijnaldum rejected Everton for Klopp
Wijnaldum was the leading goal scorer for Newcastle last season with 11 goals, and the second highest scoring midfielder in the Premier League after Riyad Mahrez [17], but even that didn’t prove plenteous as the Magpies’ deeply ingrained problems saw them relegated to the Championship.
Competition for places will be fierce at Liverpool next season, but it’s an exciting time for the club as Klopp continues to stamp his mark on the squad.
‘It was straight after the conversation I had with Jurgen Klopp that I had the feeling that I wanted to come to Liverpool, ‘ said Wijnaldum, after training with his team-mates Stanford University’s Maloney Field.
“Of course Liverpool is a big club with a good history”.
“But there had to be a match”.
Liverpool had been tracking Udinese’s Piotr Zelinski but once that deal fell down, they immediately contacted Newcastle last Sunday and Klopp had no hesitation in telling Fenway Sports Group, the club’s owners, that he was valued at £25million.
On the talk, Klopp revealed the pair “both knew we wanted to work together”.

And the player highlights why the discussion influenced the decision on his future so heavily.
“Rafa just said that Liverpool is a big club”, Wijnaldum said.
“Something like that is always good to hear”.
Jurgen Klopp’s charismatic personality was enough to make up Georginio Wijnaldum’s mind on a move to Liverpool.
“For me it’s good that I can play in more positions because that makes it easier for the coach and also easier to play”.
“It’s always great when a trainer of that kind of ability says he needs you in his team”, he continued, acknowledging that there was “interest from Everton” but that “Liverpool had more interest”.
The former PSV star, who also had the opportunity to stay at St James’ Park, has signed a five-year deal at Anfield, and speaking about his move, he told the Liverpool Echo he that he knew as soon as he met Klopp that he wanted to play under the German.
It must be a Dutch thing since much like Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie, Georginio scores when he wants!
