Wijnaldum set for Liverpool medical
Liverpool have been linked to central midfielders throughout Europe this summer, as Jürgen Klopp is expected to boost the backbone of his side before the end of the transfer window. Having failed in their pursuit of Piotr Zielinski and Mahmoud Dahoud, the Reds have set out to lure Newcastle United’s Giorginio Wijnaldum.
News broke last night that Liverpool were keen to add Newcastle and Netherlands midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum to their squad.
According to the Mail’s report, Jon Flanagan and Lucas Leiva would be two most likely players making the switch from Anfield to St James’ Park, as neither of them figure will feature prominently in Jurgen Klopp’s starting line-up next season.
Just one year removed from a £14.5million deal that brought him to the Premier League from PSV, the 25-year-old midfielder is now valued at about £20million.
The Holland worldwide wants to leave Newcastle in the wake of the club’s relegation from the Premier League.
As such, the German is prepared to part company with them in order to acquire Wijnaldum, who scored 11 goals a year ago in his debut Premier League campaign.
Wijnaldum was top scorer last season with 11 goals and is the Championship club’s top-rated asset, along with France’s Euro 2016 star Moussa Sissoko.
The Mirror claims Liverpool’s local rivals Everton and Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham Hotspur are also interested in landing Wijnaldum.
“Some can get disappointed, but we are a group of professionals and still they have to keep working”.
