Wildfire burning near Smithville prompts voluntary evacuation of state park
Another confirmed fire is a large hay fire northeast of State Highway 21-East at US 290 in Paige. The Smithville fire was said to be at least 50 acres, according to KVUE news partner the Austin American-Statesman.
A wildfire burning on about 250 acres outside of the Central Texas town of Smithville has prompted the voluntary evacuation of a state park, a research center and about a dozen homes.
She says bulldozers and aircraft were helping to help fight the fire. That fire was reportedly contained by 3 p.m.
STAR Flight’s EC-145 helicopters were responding to the Bastrop fires to use buckets to drop water on the flames. The fire was 100 percent contained around 3 p.m., according to the forest service. The county’s emergency service district says vehicles and one abandoned structure were on fire. Mutual aid from Travis County has been requested. Fire officials said the site had sustained no damage.
Earlier in the day, a small brush fire broke out in the median of 21 East and 1441, but that was quickly put out. The others were reported near Paige and another was burning in Cedar Creek, northwest of Bastrop. The Bastrop County OEM said this fire has been cleared. They warn that it takes one spark to cause a fire in these dry weather conditions.
