Will Grier: Gators going with QB Grier against Kentucky
The University of Kentucky football team’s losing streak to Florida reached 29 consecutive games Saturday night as the Gators outlasted the Wildcats 14-9 at Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington. And he got things going early with a 53-yard interception return leading to Grier’s 1-yard run.
The Gators held Kentucky’s Patrick Towles to 8-of-24 passing for just 126 yards and allowed just 115 yards rushing behind those half-dozen sacks.
The Gators ultimately extended the streak by limiting the Wildcats to field goals, denying Kentucky touchdowns on three trips inside the red zone – including two possessions in the fourth quarter.
Grier rushed 12 times for 61 yards while Taylor had 45 on 16 attempts.
In an ongoing quarterback competition, Florida head football coach Jim McElwain will start Will Grier against Kentucky for the Gators’ SEC opener.
The streak continuing is somewhat a shot in the foot to the Wildcats, but their ability to bounce back next week will speak highly of just how improved they really are. That this is all the “wussification” of America, that we’re being too soft, that this is why kids don’t grow up to be responsible adults.
Florida can’t afford to follow up with another lackluster effort, especially in its first road test of the season. And if the Gators are to contend in the SEC East, it’ll likely be that defense that’s the reason why. We’ll learn from it. That’s why we play the game.
The Kentucky Wildcats have started the season 2-0 with victories over LA-Lafayette and South Carolina, and the team will try to keep its momentum going at home with an SEC matchup against the Florida Gators. Through two games, Stanley “Boom” Williams and Jojo Kemp have combined for an impressive 354 yards rushing.
“That’s what I’m hoping for, and I can live with the results if they get our best shot and we play our best game”. “Sometimes you just have to make a play”.
“It’s always fun to see those first-year guys in their first real hostile environment”, McElwain said.
But the defense had the offense’s back again and again the rest of the way, limiting the Wildcats to two field goals and then coming up with the game-saving stop (and pick) in the final minute. “Obviously, he has a lot of growing to do”.
“We kind of went back-and-forth the whole night”, Bullard said. But much like previous year, when they went to Gainesville and threw a scare into the Gators before falling in overtime, Kentucky couldn’t close the deal. Gators sophomore Treon Harris, meanwhile, has completed 19-of-27 for 269 yards and two scores.
Without watching the film, offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson had only one suggestion of what led to Florida dominating the line of scrimmage. We’ll look at that and get it evaluated.
“They’ve done a heck of a job here at Kentucky, give them all the credit in the world when it comes to getting this program where it is”, he said.
