Will Jason Pierre-Paul be at New York Giants Training Camp?
Mara, who like his father, the late Wellington Mara, has continued to run the family business like a family, said numerous times that he believes Pierre-Paul would be best served if he were to let the team’s medical staff examine his injured hand.
Mara added that there are no “deadlines” on the talks and it sounds like the team is confident that a deal will get done.
Given the verbal chasm between the two sides, there was no expectation Pierre-Paul would be among the players reporting for conditioning drills Thursday, a technical impossibility because the star defensive end is not under contract right now anyway.
Mara, whose family has owned and operated the Giants for decades, added that he has “no idea” when Pierre-Paul will report to camp.
The Giants are still in the dark about the condition of Jason Pierre-Paul’s injury as camp opens. Pierre-Paul intended to sign the one-year, .8 million franchise tender, but reportedly now won’t do so until he’s healthy enough to pass the team physical. Best-case scenario would be the Giants getting Pierre-Paul back sometime in the middle of the season.
However to listen to the Giants inform it, they are not all for having these conversations till they see Pierre-Paul. As long as Pierre-Paul harbors hope of playing before Week 7, he seemingly would not want to give up six weeks’ worth of paychecks. I know he will get that here. “I have to be a leader, and I have to be responsible for helping everybody else”.
“We don’t know how extensive the damage is, that’s the problem”, Mara said.
Coughlin said he texted Pierre-Paul shortly after the injury but got no response. “I’m pretty sure he can play without a finger…” The agent asks for the moon, we make a reasonable offer, at some point he’ll come to his senses and we’ll have an agreement. The day after the Giants concluded a 6-10 season, the last question posed to a grim-faced Mara in his year-end briefing was whether he considered 2015 a “win-or-else proposition for a lot of people in this franchise”. After that, I think I may have used some language that I wouldn’t like my grandchildren to hear me use.
John Mara has been affiliated with the Giants his entire life, but this year, they’ve established a precedent he’d prefer not to see. “It’s something he’ll have to adjust to it, but I don’t imagine it stopping him from being the JPP that we’ve grown to see”.
It’s hard to truly believe that when he won’t even allow team officials or doctors the ability to even see his hand to determine the severity of his injury.
