Will Live-Action Star Wars TV Shows Land on Netflix?
After the success of Daredevil, rumor is that Disney is going to make a deal with Netflix to produce live-action Star Wars series.
In the meantime, Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters on December 18.
Unfortunately, no details were given about the shows themselves, or where they may be situated within the Star Wars universe. Disney and Netflix already have a partnership that’s proven successful for both parties, Netflix is more-or-less universal at this point, and releasing shows via the streaming service would allow Lucasfilm more content and format freedom than it would have on a network like the Disney-owned ABC. The report did “guess”, though, that the shows may debut in 2017, which would coincide with the release of Star Wars: Episode VIII on May 26, 2017. Since it is a 30 year time gap, it’s possible that these new shows could also be set in this timeline, but we’ll have to wait and see. Sure, he gave us the prequels, and at one stage he was very keen on doing a TV series based on the property – scripts were even completed, apparently – but compared to what Disney are now doing with the “Star Wars” brand, Lucas came off rather uninterested in doing much beyond the core Skywalker saga. This deviates from original Star Wars TV rumors, which pegged a series for Disney’s network channel ABC.
Take this one with a far galaxy of salt, as it’s hard to pin down the veracity of any of Cinelinx’s Star Wars suggestions in recent months, though the latest is at least worth considering. The report claims that Disney is planning “potentially three different” series, which would shoot between the films in order to use some of the same sets and preserve a “cinematic” look.
