Will Smith discusses playing Dr. Bennet Omalu in Concussion
The movie Concussion follows the career of Dr. Bennet Omalu as he diagnoses the brain disease CTE, a football-related trauma.
Christmas day, football and film fans will get a dramatized look at how a forensic pathologist discovered chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, in the brains of deceased NFL players, including Rhinelander High School graduate and hall of famer, Mike Webster.
From December 28, 2015 through January 8, 2016, athletes between the ages of 12 and 30 will be offered a $20 ImPACT baseline concussion screening for $10 at UBMD Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine’s Summit Healthplex office, 6934 Williams Road, Niagara Falls. Though Webster ultimately went into cardiac arrest, there were reports of odd behavior by the famous football center prior to his passing. Smith has been very public about his love of football, which is part of why his comments are a big deal.
“People are standing up and taking notice that concussions matter”, Brad Donaldson, Associate Director of Operations with the Minnesota Brain Injury Alliance, said.
But concussions and sports in general are something Donaldson has been addressing for years. “I think his hands were tied”. Bloom said he thought Will Smith delivered a “compelling” performance and gave the movie four stars. “We are seeing measurable results, including 34 percent decrease in concussions in National Football League games since the 2012 sessions”, said the National Football League in a statement. “I don’t remember me doing that, and so that was ’99, and so that was the first one”, says Ahman Green, about the first time he was concussed in the NFL.
“When it hits home, and you’re that parent sitting in the stands, and it’s your son that’s not moving, it was really a reality check”, Taylor said.
Concussion tackles some of what we don’t know, like long-term effects.
