Will Smith joins wife in not attending the Academy Awards
Smith said Thursday on ABC’s “Good Morning America” that he and Pinkett Smith have discussed it and feels “we’re uncomfortable to stand there and say this is OK”.
“My wife’s not going. She said once, ‘I’ve been in the business for 10 years and this snotty-nosed punk comes along and gets a show.’ No matter what, to her I’m just the AntiChrist”.
You won’t see Will Smith at the Oscars this year. So when I look at the series of nominations from the Academy, it’s not reflecting that beauty… All 20 nominees in the major acting categories, however, ended up being white.
She added, “I’m hoping we can find ways to step together in this instead of finding ways to fight each other”.
Smith, a mega-star whose role in National Football League drama “Concussion” was overlooked this year, said he was out of the country when his wife announced on social media that she would not attend the February 28 awards ceremony in Hollywood. “This is so deeply not about me”.
“They called me to go present with Pharrell and Common”.
He said: “There’s a regressive slide towards separatism… towards racial and religious disharmony”. I was the first black board member, the first black conductor – I hate “first black” because that means ‘only.’ I want the young African-American kids to know that the door is open. “And I find it ironic that somebody who has made their living and made millions and millions of dollars from the very people that you talk about boycotting just because you didn’t get a nomination, just because you didn’t win”. In a since-deleted Instagram post, the rapper put up a picture of Rock with the caption, “Chris please do not do the oscar awards [sic]”.
In a video captured by TMZ, K Camp supported Straight Outta Compton and said that it is going to take time before black art gets accepted by the powers that be. Then there’s the dark horse that is Mad Max: Fury Road, a technical achievement as well as an engaging, engrossing action movie which proves that the Academy can still show a little love for bombastic blockbusters every now and then.
