Will sprinters Justin Gatlin and Tyson Gay be redeemed at the Olympics?
Usain Bolt, the world’s fastest human, won the Olympic 100-meter sprint for an unprecedented third straight time on Sunday night.
In other events, there was another world record set – the third of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in track and field – with Anita Wlodarczyk of Poland throwing the hammer 82.29 meters to break her own mark on her way to gold.
“This part between the 800m and the heats of the 1500m was always going to be the most hard part in qualifying for the semi-finals of the latter”.
The same opportunities resulted in Bolt and Co. running semi’s and the final so close together. “I knew I got a bad start (in the final) and all I could tell myself was, “listen don’t panic, take your time, work yourself back”, and that was what I did”, Bolt shared.
De Grasse was initially reluctant to embrace sprinting, but Sharpe convinced the high school student of his potential.
Usain Bolt acknowledges the crowd after winning his qualifying heat in the 200-meter.
“Of course, I came to these Olympics to win three gold medals”, said Bolt, who turns 30 on the day of the closing ceremony”. “The body sometimes checks out, but mentally you’ve got to push through”, he said.
The 29-year-old shut down with 50 metres left in the race, preferring to peer over to his right a couple of times at Nigerian Ejowvokoghene Oduduru, who was second in 20.34.
It was neither easy nor pretty but Bolt got the job done, eating up the ground on Gatlin after a slow start to come through and cross the line in a time of 9.81 seconds.
“I expected to go faster, but I’m happy that I won”, Bolt told BBC Sport. In addition to her dominance in the 200, she has two Olympic bronze medals in the 100 and three medals in the relay. “I hope we can keep the tradition going as long as possible”.
“There’s a lot of Usain Bolt fans, a lot of Jamaican fans, but they don’t know me, they don’t know Justin”.
Bolt hasn’t lost an Olympic event since making his debut in the Games at age 17 in 2004, when a torn hamstring slowed him in the first round of the 200m. “Two more medals to go and I can sign off. Immortal”.
Just like in the 100, Bolt has a world record to defend in the 200.
Frank Scarpitti, Mayor of Markham, says the community will be out in force again on Thursday, to watch how Andre De Grasse, now the hometown hero, fares in the 200m race.
