Williams scores 23 points, Indiana tops Ohio State 85-60
They are 4-0 in the Big Ten and are tied for first place. Ohio State comes into Sunday as a battle tested squad that has faced top 50 teams like Virginia, Kentucky and UConn and has played fairly well outside of a poor performance at UConn. He looked like a player that knew he hadn’t played well recently and knew his team needed him to be successful.
In the first half in which the Hoosiers built their 30 point lead, Yogi, Troy, and Robert Johnson combined for 0 turnovers. “Playing with these guys, and you got guys like OG (Anunoby) going to the offensive glass and dunking the ball, I think that’s fun”. It was clear which team was the aggressor as IU raced to a 10-0 lead and never let up before halftime. The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for the Buckeyes (11-6, 3-1 Big Ten) and extended Indiana’s winning streak to nine games. Even though Ohio State is not as good as they have been in recent years, holding them to 18 points in the first half is worthy of praise. “What was most disappointing to me was, we took all of these shots, more than we usually do, and it still didn’t turn out for us”.
The Hoosiers dominated early and often, essentially ending the game for all intents and purposes before the first half was over.
“I was literally just searching for something to say, and see if we could pull ourselves out of this”, Matta said.
The Buckeyes played better in the second half, not that it mattered for the outcome of the game. “We did a couple things I was thinking, ‘You’ve done that since third grade, ‘ and the rotations that weren’t there, giving up layups, a game like this, I don’t have an answer”.
Indiana’s Amanda Cahill, right, goes up for a shot against Ohio State’s Alexa Hart during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game in Columbus, Ohio, Thursday, Jan. 7, 2016.
After the team’s 85-60 win over Ohio State, they have to be believe that they are indeed getting better.
Crean said the Hoosiers tried to force things where Wisconsin had too much defensive help, and “That’s where we’ve got to continue to grow up and learn from that”. They turned the ball over 11 times in the first half, gave up 26 points in the paint and almost got outscored by Williams alone. Loving, the team’s leading scorer (14.9 ppg), for example, failed to reach double figures three times during the seven game winning streak but each time a teammate stepped up. And Ohio State had to work for all 18 points it managed to scrape together over the game’s first 20 minutes.
IN has the week off before they travel to Minnesota on Saturday.
The Wildcats (14-2, 4-0 Big East) have won six straight to remain the conference’s only unbeaten team in league play.
As for Ohio State, they should have an easy time with Rutgers on Wednesday at home as they just lost by 31 at home.
Ferrell did not overshoot and led the Hoosiers in assists. Loving finished with just 12 points and had three turnovers in 32 minutes.
