Williams sisters win 6th Wimbledon doubles title
I dont talk about that anymore..
Serena Williams has warned her rivals she is hungrier than ever to win more Grand Slam titles after the American beat Angelique Kerber to be crowned Wimbledon champion again.
Williams beat Angelique Kerber 7-5, 6-3 in Saturday’s Wimbledon final, her 22nd major title, tied with Steffi Graf for most in the Open Era.
She said: “For me, it’s just a great feeling to be in my second Grand Slam final”. I think she should go on to win more.
“It’s been incredibly hard not to think about”, Williams said in an interview on Centre Court. Looking at the way she is playing at the age of 34, Serena looks like a hungry teenager who wants to be part of the pantheon of tennis stars.
Serena Williams on Saturday put the icing on the cake of another magnificent Wimbledon campaign by teaming up with sister Venus for a sixth doubles crown.
There had been some thought that Serena was really stung by her loss to Vinci at the U.S. Open, that it was too big a disappointment to push aside and it lingered when she followed with the losses to Kerber and Muguruza.
This was the first time since 2006 that two women have met in more than one of the year’s grand slam finals and who is to say there might not be more showdowns to come? “It was getting down to the pressure”. The victory at Wimbledon a year ago raised her Grand Slam count to 21, where it remained until Saturday.
Williams banned herself from talking about the “22” as this year’s Wimbledon entered its business end.
That was important, he knew, because it wasn’t as if she had forgotten how to play, of course, or allowed her skills to erode, even if she already was the oldest woman to be ranked No. 1 and the oldest to win a major title.
She was back on Centre Court later with sister Venus to win the doubles championship with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Hungarys Timea Babos and Kazakhstans Yaroslava Shvedova. “I had a couple of tries this year”, Williams said during the trophy ceremony. Its not something you really think about.
Actually, I felt a little more stress in the first set, Williams said.
“Oh, God, no. I’ve learned a lot about 22”. “I had one break point, and I could do nothing”.
“In those moments I have to come off and just be like, ‘do you know what you’ve done, who you are and what you continue to do, not only in tennis, but off the court as well?”
Serena, post her semi-final victory at the Wimbledon said, “I don’t deserve to be paid less because of my sex”.
‘I think that really just shows the human side of me.
Serena was pushed hard by Kerber in a high-quality clash lasting 81 minutes on Centre Court, but the German fourth seed eventually crumbled under a barrage of 39 winners and 13 aces from the defending champion.
It was a match worthy of any final as Kerber, in her first Wimbledon final, pushed the American all the way, scrapping for everything and using her outstanding speed to run down every ball. I feel like when youre younger youre obviously super excited.
And despite her 35th birthday coming in September, Williams insists she is not feeling the pace.
