Wimbledon: Andy Murray delighted to march on with no injury concerns
Murray also confirmed his injured hip was not an issue against Brown and remains confident it won’t be going forward in the tournament.
But Fognini has more to his game than Alexander Bublik and Dustin Brown, high on flash but ultimately short on substance opponents that Murray beat easily in his opening two matches.
However, there were no such troubles for two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka who continued her way back to the top of the tennis world from becoming a mother with a shock 6-3 6-3 win over last year’s Wimbledon semi-finalist Elena Vesnina. He’ll be especially fresh since he only played one full set in the first round before his opponent retired.
“I think against Fabio.it’s maybe easier to come up with a game plan because there will be a bit more structure and strategy in the match rather than just, reacting and sort of more kind of instinctive points”, Murray said.
“He started very well and was coming up with great drop volleys and really going for the returns”, the world number one said.
Murray entered the tournament with questions about his hip after skipping two exhibition matches last week.
“In the heat of the moment I did a bad thing and I apologize for this”, said Medvedev, who denied he was implying the chair umpire was paid off. “I’m moving well and I’ve been getting a lot of practise in”. I love playing on Centre Court, feel really comfortable out there. It was hot enough for Murray to drape ice towels around his neck at changeovers.
After some early problems, Murray slowly began to unpick Brown’s powerful serve, and the Brit was eventually handed the first break of the match when his opponent double faulted at 3-4 (30-40).
By the middle of the second set the Scot was firmly in control.
But Brown – bidding to defeat a No 1 for the second time in his career, Rafael Nadal being the previous victim – strikes so low you swear he must find a secret hole in the net and he kept pace with Murray, including for a point where it was Best Dink-Shot Wins, and another right after for Top Lob Prevails.
The pair have never met on grass, though, and Murray showed fine form against Brown, while he will also have plenty of home support. He won in three sets. I certainly played better than the first round which was good and I moved pretty well today.
“If I have to be honest, I think it’s completely different play here”, Fognini said. Is best-of-five. Something can change.
Andy Murray made sure there was NEVER going to be another here. “But I always want to go a step further”.
Other Wednesday winners on the men’s side included Kei Nishikori, Gilles Muller, Roberto Bautista-Agut, Aljaz Bedene, Kevin Anderson and Benoit Paire. “He has good hands up at the net”. He did not lose any of the 20 sets he played en route to winning his record 10th French Open championship last month, and he has continued that stretch with straight set victories at Wimbledon.
Medvedev, an unseeded Russian who beat Stan Wawrinka in the first round, lost to Ruben Bemelmans 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 2-6, 6-3 in the second round.
