Windows 10 EULA Update Lets Microsoft Disable Pirated Games, Illegal Hardware
While EULA’s and service agreements by their very nature tend to be overly broad and far-reaching, it’s a whole different ball game when they afford a company the ability to push down system software updates without even providing any notice.
According to new reports, Microsoft’s latest operating system may block users from using pirated software or unauthorized hardware.
While we understand that pirated software is well, illegal stuff, its the hardware bit in the EULA terms that we find a bit confusing.
The fact is, while Microsoft may act to stop you using services for pirate games, these games would only be those from Microsoft themselves, or using the Microsoft Store. “Unauthorized hardware peripheral devices” is meant to target hacking devices and ostensibly Xbox controllers with an illegal Turbo function, but negatively, this can also target Xbox controllers that have been modded for, well, whatever reason you wish.
With Windows 10 coming out, the company has now laid down the plan for the next ten years clearly.
Edge is for the moment a Windows 10-exclusive and it’s hard to believe that Microsoft will ever bring its browser on an older version of Windows when the focus is all on Windows 10. A software giant scanning your PC to determine what software you have installed, and whether that’s pirated or not, is getting into a really grey area.
More clarification is required from Microsoft on the matter. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) advised the users using Windows 10 Home pack to take all fixes, features and security date once they are available in its support page.
It should be noted that this is not an agreement tied to Windows 10, but “Microsoft Services”. If you try to go online with a cracked version of a Microsoft PC game, for example, you might end up not being able to play that game.
Because the batch is cumulative, your computer may already have some of these fixes if you recently downloaded Windows 10. Because, let’s be honest, would I lie to you?
