Winning lottery store owner has 4 franchises

Before yesterday’s drawing, the last victor was in November, when a Tennessee ticket holder claimed US$144.1 million.

Winning the grand prize requires matching all five numbers, regardless of order, and the red Powerball number.

Lottery officials say one Easy 5 ticket purchased in Harvey won the $140,000 jackpot. Both tickets matched the first five numbers – 04-08-19-27-34-(10) – to win $1 million.

Spain’s massively popular Christmas lottery, known as “El Gordo”, is ranked as the world’s richest, though it doles out millions of prizes rather than one large jackpot like the Powerball.

The owner of a 7-Eleven in California that sold a winning Powerball jackpot ticket is an Indian man who came to the United States in 1981. Many residents of the six that don’t participate crossed state lines to get their hands on tickets before the drawing, according to the Multi-State Lottery Association.

Craig Hestand, manager of the QuikTrip in Dallas, said he was unsure what his store’s take would be for selling the $1 million ticket.

The winners won’t take home the full $1.5 billion, though. The other 11 were sold in Cloverdale, Gardena, Irwindale, Nipton, Pacoima, Redlands, Santa Cruz, Santa Monica, Santa Rosa, Tustin and Vacaville.

The total jackpot set a USA record of $1.6 billion.

But the owners of those tickets aren’t the only winners from the Powerball frenzy that swept the country this week.

California also confirmed that two more winning tickets were sold in Tennessee and Florida.

Total Kansas Powerball sales were $9.68 million, easily surpassing the record of $6.77 million set just last Saturday, lottery officials said. Two hours before the lucky Powerball numbers dropped, the Chevron near Belmont and Fowler was swamped with people buying hopes and dreams from the lottery machine. Florida’s victor also has 180 days from the date of the drawing to claim their prize but if they want a lump sum payment, that deadline is cut to 60 days.
