Winning Powerball ticket sold in California
At least one lucky victor has scooped the record-breaking $1.59 billion US Powerball lottery jackpot following Wednesday’s draw.
Traverso had no further information on where the tickets in Tennessee and Florida were sold, and none of the winners’ identities have yet been revealed. The store will receive a $US1-million bonus for selling the ticket.
The numbers drawn for Wednesday’s Powerball jackpot, set at nearly $1.6 billion, were 8, 27, 34, 4, 19 and Powerball: 10.
The jackpot, which reached record levels after 20 drawings without a victor, was estimated to be almost $1.6 billion.
The jackpot will be paid in annual payments over 29 years, unless the victor or winners opt for a lump-sum payment.
The last drawing on January 9 marked the 19th without a grand prize victor.
According to Texas lottery officials earlier today, there was an 85.8 percent of the possible number combinations had been sold.
Spain’s massively popular Christmas lottery, known as “El Gordo”, is ranked as the world’s richest, though it doles out a single jackpot among millions of prizes, instead of one large jackpot like the Powerball.
Florida was also seeing brisk sales totals as the state was seeing 53,000 tickets sold every minute on Wednesday.
Officials said it would take several hours to know if there are any other winning tickets.
Tickets for Powerball can be purchased in 44 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The previous Powerball jackpot record was $590.5 million sold in Florida back on May 18, 2013.
The winning ticket in California was sold at a 7-Eleven in Chino Hills, a suburb of Los Angeles, according to media reports.
Estimated jackpot amounts, which were released daily, had been steadily rising since November 4, when the jackpot was reset at $40 million. It is a non-profit, government-benefit association owned and operated by its 36 member lotteries.
