Winter Storm Niko turns NYC into a real-life snowglobe
The forecast is still calling for between 6 and 10 inches of snow starting at midnight on Thursday.
The storm was forecast to swipe a large area of the Northeast, possibly snarling flights at airports from Pennsylvania and New Jersey north into NY state and coastal New England.
Boston Mayor Marty Walsh declared a snow emergency Thursday and announced that school would be closed.
Blizzard-like conditions are rolling through the East Coast today (February 9), and there’s a web camera set up in New York City’s Times Square to see the snow fall! That total had been climbing rapidly Wednesday afternoon, suggesting the overall tally would climb even higher. “You can’t see across the street”.
February 7, 4:10 p.m.: The East End could see snow accumulations of 6 to 10 inches or higher late Wednesday night and Thursday, according to the National Weather Service, which issued a winter storm watch Tuesday afternoon. Parts of Pennsylvania and West Virginia are expected to witness at least six inches of snow or more. Freezing rain could linger in areas along the New Hampshire line.
As of 8 a.m. ET, nearly 8 inches of snow had fallen in Albany, New York, and about 3 inches of snow had collected in New York City’s Central Park, according to ABC News meteorologists. Counties in northeastern New Jersey are included in the map below. “What’s life without adventure?”
Airlines canceled almost 3,000 flights, winter storm warnings stretched from ME to Maryland and salt trucks were deployed across the region on Thursday as the season’s most unsafe snow event rolled into the Northeastern region of US. “We live in New England”.

Residents have been warned about an approaching powerful, fast-moving storm that could deliver more than a foot of snow in some areas.
At press time, Suffolk County, home to Boston, had received 1.7 inches of snow.

The snow is expected to come to an end Thursday night.

Rhode Islanders reported seeing and hearing “thundersnow”, with the rumble of thunder accompanying the near white-out conditions.
“I made a decision to plow now I am stuck darn!” she tweeted.
