Winter storm slams Northern Plains with snow
Western and south central Minnesota, along with nearby areas of South Dakota and North Dakota, could get more than 8 inches of snow, the weather service said, with some spots getting as much as 10 inches.
The US weather provided little to be grateful for this Thanksgiving, with rain, snow and freezing rain affecting many parts of the country.
Schools called off classes and road crews warned of hazardous conditions Monday as a snowstorm crawled across the Northern Plains, while states farther south worked to recover from a weekend of icy weather and deadly flooding.
Winter Storm Delphi has been named by the winter storm naming committee at The Weather Channel. An inch or so of snow and sleet will be possible in places, along with even some rain. Drivers have struggled on snow-packed roadways in southern and southwestern parts of the state, Minnesota Department of Transportation communications director Kevin Gutknecht told the AP.
The snow is forecast to end from west to east on Tuesday night.
This has the potential to disrupt both the morning and afternoon commutes in Minneapolis/St. Paul, and leftover snow and wind in the morning could also pose problems in Sioux Falls.
Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport had 5.4 inches as of 6 a.m. Saturday.
Snow accumulations are likely, mainly along and south of Highway 2. This time around, the heaviest snow is forecast to stay northwest of the KWWL viewing area.
Warnings sometimes can be issued for specific hazards… like ice storm warnings…
The Lincoln area won’t get hit quite as hard as Omaha and portions of northeast Nebraska, where as much as 6 inches may fall, according to the Weather Service. It now looks like all systems are “go” for our biggest snowfall event of the yet young winter season so far Monday and Tuesday.
