Winter weather creates emergency need for blood donations
“Every two seconds someone in the USA needs blood, we don’t get a winter break from needing blood”, Stephanie Arcangelo of the CT chapter told WCBS 880’s Fran Schneidau.
Andrea Cefarelli, executive director of donor recruitment at NYBC, said more than 1,400 scheduled blood donations were canceled as a result of the snowstorm and more cancellations are expected throughout the week.
The American Red Cross has an emergency need for blood and platelet donors.
It estimated that it would have collected more than 2,300 blood and platelet donations during that time.
Regional CEO Barry Porter says that amounts to about 2,300 blood donations lost, hurting their already low blood supply. “Eligible donors are urged to make an appointment to give blood or platelets now and help ensure blood products are available for patients locally, and across the country, including areas severely impacted by winter weather”.
The Parkers have given blood in all 50 states as part of their Donations Across America campaign. These donations are needed to respond to patient emergencies, including treatment for cancer or heart surgery. People donating must be at least 17 years old and weigh at least 110 pounds with good health. Donors age 18 and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
