Wireless iPhone charging could be just a year away
According to Bloomberg, Apple is now trying to overcome these issues, and the wireless charging technology is still being assessed for implementation.
The current smartphones with wireless charging feature require users to place their handset on a charging mat or other devices. Mobee’s Magic Charger is a ideal example: it replaces the batteries in your Magic Mouse with an inductive coupler battery pack that charges when you set it on a USB-powered base plate.
Wireless charging is one of the most exciting innovations on phones from the last few years – and it seems Apple feels it’s nearly good enough to put on the iPhone.
Given that the iPhone 7 is widely reported to be dropping the 3.5mm headphone port, shifting extra connection responsibility to the Lightning port, another charging method could be just what Apple needs. That same charger point could also power accessories, like bluetooth keyboards and mice. Mobile devices with wireless charging capabilities could be released as soon as next year. A new report, however, suggests the Cupertino, Calif. firm could be developing a new way to charge the iPhone that wouldn’t require any cables. Still, many companies have tried and failed to achieve safe wireless charging at noteworthy distances. Apple’s new technology could allow you to charge your phone from a distance of at least three feet. Apple now uses a similar technique, called induction, to charge its Watch within millimeters of the power source. The patent indicated iMac to function as a hub to recharge devices that are within a one-meter radius.
Wireless charging technology isn’t new. Another patent highlighted aluminum phone casings that allowed radio waves to pass through, which could be used for wireless charging.
