Wisconsin governor cuts up to $8 million in annual Planned Parenthood funding
Walker signed the bills at Life’s Connection, a women’s health clinic in Waukesha that helps promote abortion alternatives.
URGE convened on the Statehouse to meet with lawmakers in hopes of reversing what they see as a series of bills and budget measures that have restricted access to abortion and diverting family planning and health service funding from Planned Parenthood.
Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin could lose about $7.5 million a year because of the measures, an organization spokeswoman said. The bill’s main sponsor, Republican Rep. Kathleen Souza of Manchester, said she was motivated by the “cruel” conversations featured in the videos. “We may not be able to protect their lives, but we should be able to give them some dignity in death”. “I believe that that begins at conception, and I believe that one of the cornerstones of the Declaration of Independence and what our Constitution is drafted around is the protection of life”.
Another bill considered Wednesday, Sen.
Sen. Duey Stroebel, R-Saukville, rejected the premise that Republicans are going after birth control. In Texas it led to a 35% decline in women using the most effective methods of birth control and a dramatic 27% spike in births among women who had previously used injectable contraception, according to new research in the New England Journal of Medicine. “That’s not an issue”, Stroebel said. That’s because the clinic’s donor support subsidizes the expense of caring for the low-income women. I think everybody else here does. “It is 12 pages of targeted regulations of abortion providers”. That’s what this bill is about. They raised “serious concerns” that demanding the names of health-care providers and students “jeopardizes individual privacy and safety”. The revolt ultimately forced Boehner to announce his resignation, but plans proceeded for the panel – frequently called the Select Committee on Planned Parenthood by Republicans and Democrats alike.
The other bill prevents the state from passing federal Title X grant money to any organization or affiliate that provides abortions. In Utah, Governor Herbert’s own Department of Health advised him that blocking care at Planned Parenthood would be a “bad idea” and put people’s health at risk-that 4,400 men and women would not receive STD testing, and that 3,725 people with chlamydia or gonorrhea and their partners would not receive treatment.
Anna V. Eskamani, the director of public policy and field operations at Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida, speaks against proposed Florida legislation during a news conference at the Collier County Government Center on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2016, in East Naples.
Officials from StemExpress, which ended its ties to Planned Parenthood in the wake of the attack videos’ release, said the company has turned over to the panel the same materials requested by investigations into Planned Parenthood by the House Committee on Government Reform, the Senate Judiciary Committee, and the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Yet the state of Louisiana went so far as to claim that dentists, orthopedists, and audiologists could provide reproductive health care for Planned Parenthood’s patients.
Bevin, a staunchly anti-abortion Republican, ordered abortions halted at the downtown facility after learning last month that it was performing the procedures.
