Wisconsin, PSU won’t look ahead to playoff
This and more is what the College Football Playoff selection committee sorts through to pick the four best teams in the country. The Buckeyes didn’t place anything in jeopardy last weekend, sitting back and watching on television as all power five conferences crowned their champions. The Nittany Lions played Kent State, Pittsburgh and Temple but did give Ohio State its only loss.
As college football pundits debated whether two Big Ten teams should make the four-team playoff, the two coaches vying for a Big Ten championship tonight trained their attention on something less nebulous: Winning one more game. “It’s up to you, committee”. In between, the games have been mostly blowouts. He sought to establish that 11-1 Ohio State had locked in a berth, along with Alabama.
MI gets a juicy Orange Bowl date against Florida State, with Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh saying: “I know I’m motivated and ready to put in the work”. Penn State now could start thinking big, despite being banged-up due to injuries. However, the Badgers were forced into a 4th-and-1 situation on the Penn State 24-yard line with 1:04 remaining, and the Nittany Lions stacked up Wisconsin running back Corey Clement at the line of scrimmage to preserve what looked to be an unthinkable victory.
Wisconsin would need a touchdown to force overtime, while Penn State would need a stop to complete its 21-point comeback.
The Nittany Lions got to Indianapolis by way of an 8-1 conference schedule that saw them win six of their conference games by 14 or more points.
He said Washington’s only loss was to a top-10 team in USC, while of Penn State’s two losses, one was a “not competitive” 49-10 drubbing by MI, the other coming to 8-4 Pittsburgh. None of them were ranked any lower than sixth since the selection committee started ranking teams in early November. Basically, they are tiebreakers.
The Nittany Lions and Trojans combined to go 3-5 in September. Much like Penn State, the wins the last two months have not been over impressive teams, the Badgers are just out doing their jobs, much like Penn State. And if it does, which one? Penn State’s Tyler Davis has been near ideal in Field Goals this season.
“When you can say you’ve earned the right to be called Big Ten champions, that’s a heckuva statement and a heckuva accomplishment by a team”. Deshaun Watson added to his Heisman Trophy resume and Clemson needed every one of the five touchdowns he accounted to hold off the Hokies.
In Atlanta, Alabama showed off all its weapons beating No.15 Florida 54-16 in the Southeastern Conference championship game. Since that day, the Sooners are 9-0 and won the Big12. Even though one was the conference champion of the league the committee felt was the strongest in college football – and beat the other when the two actually played. Wisconsin is -1.5 over Penn State in this game.
If nothing else, though, the Nittany Lions have made things interesting.
The victor has an outside chance of making the four-team College Football Playoff.
The committee has set a standard that it values conference title game victories. That won’t happen this time around.
Coach James Franklin thinks that should be good enough.
It’s the only time it can be said that a team had to settle to play in the Rose Bowl. And if we get left out, we’re still playing for the Rose Bowl.
Also, Colorado quarterback Sefo Liufau was hurt during the MI game, aiding the Wolverines’ comeback victory.
