With 4 games to go, Giants offense needs to wake up
The Steelers posted their third win in a row on Sunday afternoon, previously beating the Cleveland Browns and Indianapolis Colts. NY will now have to go back to the Big Apple and evaluate what went wrong.
The New York Giants faced the Pittsburgh Steelers today at Heinz Field. If he does get his full speed back, he’ll form a deadly combination with Ben Roethlisberger, who said Green “wants to be great”.
One good play was all it would have taken to erase a forgettable first quarter, one good play to bury the freakish sequence of events that led to the Giants trailing by a safety and a field goal, one good play to ignite an offense that has yet to hit full speed this season. “We need to take care of the ball better”.
Manning made the biggest mistake Sunday, trying to squeeze a pass to tight end Larry Donnell on second-and-4 from the Steelers 9-yard line with NY down 5-0. NY also failed to convert a fourth-and-goal in the third quarter when trailing by 14. That touchdown occurred with just 26 seconds remaining. “But like I said, you can’t rely on anybody”.
“It’s one of those plays that’s kind of like a broken play and you step up and scramble”. But luckily, they found it for me, so I was happy about that. “He thought we were in one thing and we were in another”.
That was apparent early in the game. However on 2nd and 4 from the 9, linebacker Lawrence Timmons picked off a Manning pass intended for Larry Donnell and returned it for 58 yards to the Giants 40 yard line.
Pittsburgh methodically built a 14-0 halftime lead in unorthodox fashion. You got to go out and get it.
Facing the Giants’ potent no-huddle offense, the Steelers’ defense allowed just 234 yards, made two stands in the red zone and recorded two key interceptions off of NY quarterback Eli Manning. Yet McAdoo, who was promoted from offensive coordinator to replace Tom Coughlin, says he isn’t concerned about Manning and the rest of the players on that side of the ball.
Clearly shaken and holding himself back, Cruz said “Somebody got to give me an answer as to why” no passes from Eli Manning came his way. Soon after he threw a 22 yard pass to Brown in the back of the endzone. “The guy didn’t see the ball”.
The Steelers responded with a touchdown of their own, Roethlisberger moving his offence 88 yards in just seven plays, finishing with a 20 yard throw to a wide open Green and re-establishing Pittsburgh’s seven point advantage. Then, in the fourth quarter, the holes got a little bigger. For the second time this season, he went through a game without a single catch – he also was blanked in Green Bay. The G-Men tried to force feed Rashad Jennings on the ground (3.2 yards per carry) to no avail, but the veteran back did catch six passes out of the backfield, including a touchdown.
“Coach Tomlin knew how I felt. We’re not trying to go out of our way to make plays and make holes in our defense and that’s really been making a big difference for us”. “Especially when I’m sitting out”. We capitalized right after my fumble. I have a hunch they will be up to the test. In between, Bell ran three times for 17 yards and had a 5-yard catch.
“My teammates believe in me, kept motivating me, so I owe them a lot”, Green said.
“We are good enough to compete against anybody”, Manning said. It was the first ever 100-yard receiving game for Green, who spent his first four seasons in the National Football League mostly as the backup to future Hall of Famer Antonio Gates.
A big kickoff return by Bobby Rainey on Sunday set up a meaningless 52-yard drive that Manning ended with a TD pass to Sterling Shepard.
After that, he said, “it’s (the offense’s lack of) consistency”.
The Ravens are the nasty ones at No. 1 against the run in Week 16, but he ripped them at home last season.
Strong safety Landon Collins played every defensive snap for the ninth consecutive game. As we sit here today, the Vikings and Packers are quickly slipping from the playoff picture, whereas the Redskins and Steelers have not met their expectations. “We closed out a game in decent fashion”.
While the Steelers’ offense continues to thrive, most notably with the emergence of Ladarius Green, the Steelers’ defense also continues to be on the rise heading into the final quarter of the 2016 regular season. Roethlisberger has now won three of four games against Manning in head-to-head matchups.
They pulled off a first down but had to punt.
