With Big Ten West in flux, Wisconsin embraces its identity

A source told The Dallas Morning News that Stevenson had not been in contact with anyone on Wisconsin’s coaching staff this summer, despite head coach Paul Chryst telling reporters a month prior that he expected Stevenson on campus for fall camp.

Chryst insisted UW can get enough quality athletes to remain competitive.

The Wisconsin Badgers are ranked in the preseason USA Today Coaches Poll for the fourth straight season, checking in at No. 18 in advance of the 2015 season. If he can learn to take what the defense gives instead of trying to make the big play on every play – like many scouting reports on him suggest – he could be a solid starting quarterback for the Badgers, who should be a front-runner for another Big Ten West title.

“There’s a big part of me that’s really happy Jordan’s going to a good place”, Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst said at Big Ten media days in Chicago. He was finally healthy last season, playing in all 14 games, including five starts as UW’s nickelback.

As Badgers’ offensive coordinator, Chryst guided his teams to the Big Ten lead in scoring from 2009-11 before he moved to Pittsburgh. But the key Spartan running back to watch is freshman LJ Scott, who drew comparisons to Le’Veon Bell by coach Mark Dantonio. Clement has averaged 7.0 yards per carry in two seasons as a backup.

“He knows he doesn’t have to be Melvin”, Chryst said.

Wisconsin running back Corey Clement wants to go back to the old tradition of the winning team keeping the Axe on their sideline.

“Nothing new for us”, Cook said. “We’ve been focused since January on becoming a better football program”.

While they were there, former 2015 recruit Jordan Stevenson, denied admission to the university recently, announced on Twitter he was committing to Wisconsin’s Big Ten West Division rival, Nebraska.

In 1997, Riley and Chryst reunited at Oregon State and would coach together in seven of the next eight seasons, four in Corvallis sandwiched around three with the San Diego Chargers. He was also head coach of the San Diego Chargers from 1999-2001. Alabama is third, with defending national champ Ohio State number one. Andersen said it was “highly frustrating” that he lost a few recruits to academics after telling them they would be able to enroll. “And we’ve dealt with one”.

Chryst said Stevenson did everything he was asked, retaking a test and even raising his score.

Terrapins coach Randy Edsall said that Oklahoma State transfer Daxx Garman was officially cleared this week. “The last two years have been good games”.

“I think the rivalry is healthy”, Alvarez said. “At least we have experience, and it’s going to be neat to see the completion unfold here in the preseason”.
