With Joaquin Headed Elsewhere, Bill de Blasio Is Going Back to Washington
De Blasio says a hurricane briefing Thursday evening showed “a positive trend” of the storm track moving away from the city.
New York State Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan wants to extend the state’s property tax cap to New York City – saying such a move would have provided “multibillion-dollar savings for the people of the city of New York” if implemented over the past five years.
Officials said the programme is available citywide, but will focus on neighbourhoods where there is increased rise of evictions because of gentrification, such as Bedford-Stuyvesant, Bushwick and Crown Heights in Brooklyn, Jamaica in Queens, and Harlem in Manhattan. “The MTA is an authority created by the Legislature to deliver transit services throughout the region, not to stifle projects at the expense of millions of suffering customers”.
Transit Workers Union Local 100 this week placed an ad in media outlets that depicted de Blasio as the operator of a train covered in graffiti and straight out of a very different New York City. The mayor is in a public feud with Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Cuomo is reportedly busy seeking out candidates who could primary de Blasio in the next mayor’s race.
De Blasio, a Democrat, is slated to travel to Washington and Baltimore Friday and Saturday for a series of political meetings.
The state’s tax cap, which exempts New York City, makes it hard for localities and school districts to raise property taxes by more than 2 percent or the rate of inflation, whichever is lower.
The five pension funds’ assets total over $160 billion, including at least $33 million of exposure to thermal coal in the public markets, so the foothold is now substantial.
