With Kerr back, NBA reviewing who will coach West All-Stars
He coached Friday’s game seated alongside Luke Walton, who had replaced Kerr for the first 43 games of the season and earned Western Conference Coach of the Month honors for October/November.
And despite the Warriors’ incredible 39-4 run under interim coach Luke Walton – who happily moved aside one seat for Kerr’s rearrival – the Warriors missed their coach.
Curry poured in 39 points and banked in a buzzer-beating shot from just behind the midcourt stripe before halftime as part of a triple-double in the Warriors’ 122-110 win against the Indiana Pacers on Friday. “It’s remarkable to me that I’m 50 years old and have been retired for 13 years, and they have three guys and a coach who are still on that team”. He has been involved with the team’s daily activities recently, accompanying the Warriors on their just-completed trip to Detroit, Cleveland and Chicago.
Currently, San Antonio’s Gregg Popovich is in line to go with his staff. The Spurs (37-6) have four games by the January 31 cutoff, while Oklahoma City, at 32-12, has five. Kerr chose to take a leave of absence on October 1 and was also hampered by pounding headaches. It was of more significance than their other wins this year though, marking their 40th victory of the season, according to USA Today.
San Antonio is among the NBA’s top five for fewest turnovers (12.9), while the Warriors are in the bottom five (15.0).
“The Warriors go on a 55-game winning streak and they’re only two games ahead of them”, said Miami’s Chris Bosh, slightly overstating Golden State’s winning streak. The first matchup of the season between these apparent juggernauts marks the first time that teams with winning percentages over 85.0 have met this late in the season.
If there are any people more excited for Kerr’s return than Kerr himself, they are the players who he helped coach to a championship last season. “Next time, I’m keeping the board”.
The Warriors should have the goods at home, as they have done all season but the Pacers will put up a fight. The flashes of brilliance scattered through the 2-4 quarter while bookended by the first 6 minutes and the Death Lineup close-out was enough to keep the Pacers at bay.
“But the last 10 days or so have been great; I’ve really felt good physically”.
Kerr received a standing ovation before the game and responded by mouthing a “thank you”.
“He’s very confident in his offensive game”, Pacers coach Frank Vogel said of Turner.
Kerr couldn’t wait to get back out there.
The defending champion Warriors won their 38th straight regular-season home game to tie the 1985-86 Celtics for third place on the all-time list for such unbeaten streaks.
Don’t assume the Spurs won’t be right there with them, for it’s nothing less than astonishing that the Spurs are having the best start ever after remodeling the roster.
