With Kerr Out, Luke Walton Will Coach Warriors To Start Season
Steve Kerr will not coach in his team’s season opener against the Pelicans, according to GM Bob Myers.
“I talked to Steve and he is improving, but there still is no timeline as to when he’s coming back”, Myers said.
Center Andrew Bogut, no stranger to recuperating from injuries, said the team would love to have Kerr on the sideline on opening night but stressed that the coach should take whatever time is necessary to fully heal. “He got after it on defense, and he proved to us that he can score,” Walton said.
Golden State’s head of everything basketball made sure to point out that Walton has an NBA pedigree, the respect of the roster, and possibly most important, championship rings.
Clark, a 6-foot-3 guard from Belmont in his third season as a pro, impressed the Warriors with his versatility.
The Warriors have still not given a timetable for Kerr’s return but it is a positive sign that he will work closely with Walton, helping the newbie head coach start the season in his absence. “I don’t mean with Luke, just without coach”.
“I think last season was ‘The Warriors are a regular season team, they’re not going to do anything in the Playoffs.’ We heard that all year”. “Luke will hold down the fort until Luke’s able to come back, and stay back”, Myers said. “Luke we have full confidence in, and he has a great staff around him.”. But while Walton won rings with the Lakers and has a famous Hall of Famer/Deadhead as a father, does he have anywhere near Kerr’s credibility in the huddle and locker room?
“We’re going to prepare the same and attack it like we did past year”, Walton said.
“So we’ve had all these testing – bulletin board material type – things about other teams disrespecting us”.
Until the head coach returns full-time, whenever that day might be, I have perhaps the most pertinent question of all: Has anyone spoken to the surgeon who nicked the dura of Steve Kerr’s spine? He’ll start hanging around the practice court more and hanging around the office a little more.
