With Muguruza through, time for Serena vs. Maria

So a reporter asked Williams whether Drake might be a “lucky mascot”.

Although Serena is still at the top of her game and going for a true Grand Slam this season, Venus has been struggling for the past few years and was diagnosed with an energy-sapping autoimmune disease in 2011, three years after her last Wimbledon title. Drake laughed, leaned forward and covered his face.

“We both like to look back at that summer”, said Federer, who is 12-11 against Murray. “Just like family”.

Serena Williams lost the first set of her Wimbledon quarterfinal match against Victoria Azarenka 6-3.

Wozniacki lost to Serena in the 2014 U.S. Open final, Radwanska was beaten in the 2012 Wimbledon final, Jankovic in the 2008 U.S. Open final and Safarova in this year’s French Open final. But the top-seeded Serb can still defend his title at Wimbledon, a victory that would give him a third championship at the All England Club.

All four of them lost to 20-time major champion Serena Williams in Grand Slam finals. The last player to win all four major titles in the same year was Steffi Graf in 1988.

Madison Keys has reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time.

The No. 2-seeded Federer is closing in on his record eighth trophy at the grass-court tournament; No. 3 Murray’s 2013 championship was the first for a British man at Wimbledon in 77 years.

Three of Wednesday’s men’s quarterfinals are set: Roger Federer against Gilles Simon, Andy Murray against Vasek Pospisil, and Stan Wawrinka against Richard Gasquet.

LONDON (AP) – Roger Federer and Andy Murray ran into each other Wednesday morning in the champions’ locker room at the All England Club, then walked together over to the practice area to prepare – on adjacent courts – for their respective quarterfinals later in the day.

Kevin Anderson won the first set of their fourth-round match 7-6 (6) Monday on Court 1 after Djokovic double-faulted at 6-6 of the tiebreaker.

With Garbine Muguruza through to the Wimbledon final, it’s time to find out who she will play in Saturday’s championship match.

Sharapova, the 2004 Wimbledon champion, has lost only 15 games through three rounds and will next face Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan.

Williams won the Australian Open and the French Open this year.

“Obviously”, Djokovic said, “the experience of being in these final stages of Wimbledon many times is going to help me”.

The fourth-seeded Russian struggled for a bit but still beat CoCo Vandeweghe of the United States 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-2 Tuesday on Centre Court.

The 20th-seeded Spaniard, who reached the quarterfinals at the last two French Opens, advanced Tuesday by beating Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland 7-5, 6-3 on Court 1.

Federer, Murray and Djokovic have all won the title at the All England Club, but Gasquet has never been past the semifinals, also making it that far in 2007.

Federer, trying to win another Wimbledon at age 33, is 9-0 in the semifinals at Wimbledon, losing only one set along the way.

Back in 1995, this was the final four at the All England Club: No. 1 Andre Agassi, No. 2 Pete Sampras, No. 3 Boris Becker, No. 4 Goran Ivanisevic.

Muguruza, who won the first set 6-2, is playing in a major semifinal for the first time.

Sharapova won her first major title at Wimbledon in 2004.

The Murrays are the first brothers to reach the semifinals in singles and doubles at the same Wimbledon since John and Neale Fraser did it in 1962.

But the world wants to know what’s happening, and the task of capturing and recording every single drop shot, volley and epic five-set comeback falls to IBM, the official technology partner at the All England Lawn Tennis Club.
