Without Coach K, Duke beats Georgia Tech
Associate head coach Jeff Capel was in charge during Coach K’s absence.
This will be the first game Krzyzewski has missed since the 1994-95 season. Doctors at Duke University Hospital evaluated him and advised him to stay behind in Durham rather than travel to Georgia Tech for the game.
Azura Stevens finished with 14 points and Lambert had 10 for the Blue Devils, who had a four-game winning streak snapped and were denied their first win over a top-3 opponent since they beat No. 3 Ohio State in 2009. Notre Dame closed the second quarter by missing seven of their nine field-goal attempts while the Blue Devils went on a 7-0 run to bring the game to 35-27.
Peterson had four of the Oranges 13 steals and Miami turned it over 26 times, which led to 15 points on the other end.
Georgia 69, No. 25 SC 56: Yante Maten scored 18 points, Kenny Gaines had 17, and the host Bulldogs (12-8, 5-4 SEC) handed the Gamecocks (19-3, 6-3) their third loss.
CORVALLIS, Ore. Jamie Weisner scored 25 points on 9-for-10 shooting to lead Oregon State past Arizona State in a matchup of the Pac-12 Conferences top teams.
The next scheduled game for the Duke men is Tuesday night at Georgia Tech.
It’s been more than 20 years since Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski wasn’t on the bench for a basketball game. He coached in the Blue Devils’ next game. The school said Krzyzewski – the winningest men’s coach in Division I history – is expected to return to the team soon.
Georgia Tech (12-10, 2-7 ACC) was led by forward Nick Jacobs and guard Adam Smith, who each scored 17 points, and guard Tadric Jackson, who scored 15 points. The biggest development though might have been the play of Derryck Thornton.
With three minutes left in the tight scoring game and Cable swooshed in for the steal to make a layup, and back came the Fighting Irish. After making 18 of their 31 shots in the first half, the Yellow Jackets shot just 31 percent in the final 20 minutes.
The Georgia Tech offense was successful in getting the ball to the low post in the first half, but those opportunities dried up in the second half. Fouled Out-Stevens. Rebounds-Notre Dame 42 (Turner 13), Duke 49 (Chidom, Greenwell 9).
