Wizard magic: JK Rowling hopes Harry Potter play goes global
British author JK Rowling, creator of the Harry Potter series of books.
Daddy issues run deep in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. But she added; “For those who grew up on – and with – Harry Potter, it will revive a powerful addiction to Ms. Rowling’s brand of poignant truth”.
Here are five of our absolute favorites interviews, speeches, and documentaries…
The Cursed Child is now sold out, but another 250,000 tickets are set to go on sale next week as the play’s run has been extended until December 2017.
Young Harry Potter enthusiasts from around the world queued outside the ornate Palace Theatre for a glimpse of Rowling and the cast of the production.
The last Harry Potter book, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”, drew predictably excited crowds to bookstores on the night of its 2007 release, selling more than 8 million copies in the U.S. within the first 24 hours of its release.
As the new play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child premieres Saturday, with publicity efforts that some are likening to George Lucas, the word is that J.K. Rowling is wearing out the Harry Potter franchise.
Tonight, bookstores across the country will do something they haven’t done in a long while: Fling open their doors to host late-night parties for masses of Muggles looking to get their Harry Potter fix.
The play has taken over one of London’s largest theatres for a two-parter (written with Jack Thorne) that’s reminiscent of Shakespeare’s Henry IV, but the printed version (for that’s what’s on offer, not a novelisation) is likely to be the year’s biggest-selling book. “Sometimes I go back and reread Harry Potter as a nostalgic experience, and I’m not sure I want to ruin that”.
Sunday July 31 is the official release date, chosen because it marks Harry’s birthday in the stories, and also author J. K. Rowling’s birthday.
Will that hold now that the text of “Cursed Child” will sell what is expected to be millions of copies?
US bookseller Barnes & Noble, which is also hosting parties, said the Potter books still top their best-selling lists. “It’s the next piece of the Harry Potter canon that we love”. “We try to keep giving them something new”. In November, Scholastic is publishing the screenplay for “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”, a coming movie that expands the Harry Potter universe to North America.
Unlike “Cursed Child”, this script was written by Rowling herself.
