Wolfsburg beats Bayern on penalties to win German Super Cup
Pep Guardiola’s frustration was clear to see after Bayern Munich lost to VfL Wolfsburg on penalties in the German Super Cup, the curtain-raiser to the Bundesliga season where the league champions take on the German Cup holders.
The “Wolves” converted all their attempts from the spot meanwhile Xabi Alonso’s shot was blocked by Wolfsburg keeper Koen Casteels. “The Supercup’s a big title for me and I want to win it”.
Wolfsburg – who finished ten points adrift of Bayern last season – could’ve taken the lead after 32 minutes when Ivan Perisic’s cross evaded the clutches of several Bayern defenders only for German worldwide goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to punch clear.
The German FA (DFB) staged the first Supercup in 1987 when league champions Bayern Munich beat Cup winners Hamburger in Frankfurt to lift the inaugural trophy.
However, a myriad of pundits and columnists think that “Pep” will part ways with the club next year.
Dieter Hecking introduced the likes of Andre Schürrle, Nicklas Bendtner and Max Kruse with the hope of securing an equaliser.
“You can’t say Wolfsburg were better than us because they actually won the game on penalties, though”. The Uruguayan roofed his first-time blast and the scoring was complete. Just some months in the past, Inexperienced’s agent was hyping up supposed worldwide curiosity in his shopper’s providers from proper there within the Bundesliga and even stretching all the best way to MLS (*sigh*). City have been linked with a move for the Belgium worldwide though Wolfsburg are insisting there have been no bids as yet for de Bruyne – from City or anyone else for that matter. Guardiola said his captain would have to be flexible throughout the season. Bayern conceded plenty of opportunities on the counterattack and despite Douglas Costa looking very bright at times, weren’t sharp enough in the final third.
Costa was also involved in Bayern’s first real chance of the night when his diving header following a corner found Boateng alone on the back post.
It’s possible Arjen Robben makes his return from a muscle injury, but Munich supporters are more eagerly awaiting the debut of newest acquisition and midfielder Arturo Vidal.
