Woman accused of tossing water on Baltimore mayor
After entertaining residents attending an event at the Mondawmin Mall by shaking her backside, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake was doused with a cup of water by a woman in the audience, according to WJZ-TV.
“This is an excellent way to bring people together to celebrate the community and also have fun”, Rawlings-Blake said in advance of the festival.
Witnesses say the water struck the back of the mayor’s jacket.
“I didn’t know what it was that she threw at me”, Rawlings-Blake told The Sun right after the incident.
The mayor of Baltimore got an unwelcome surprise while mingling on Saturday with festival-goers: she was splashed by a thrown cup of water.
Rawlings-Blake reportedly continued on with her appearance at the Mondawmin Festival, located in a Baltimore neighborhood that was a notorious area during April’s riots, after her aides dried her off.
Later that evening the mall was looted. It was an odd, random event. “Things like this happen”, her spokesperson said. The spring unrest was a response to the alleged police brutality and death of Freddie Gray. Six police officers have been indicted on murder charges.
Rawlings-Blake later clarified that the remark was taken out of context, and that she wasn’t instructing police to allow violence or property destruction. Recently, Commissioner Anthony Batts was fired days ago over rising violent crime in the city.
