Woman allowed to wear colander on head for driver’s license photo
The Mass. Registry of Motor Vehicles is allowing a Pastafarian woman to wear a colander in her driver’s licensepicture.
Miller is a member of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, an atheist group whose followers wear spaghetti strainers as a religious symbol.
A spokeswoman for the RMV told the Associated Press the agency prohibits wearing hats in license photos, with only medical and religious exceptions.
Patty DeJuneas, one of the members of Secular Legal Society that had represented Miller said that Pastafarianism a secular religion which used a parody for making their point.
“With millions, if not thousands, of devout worshipers, the Church of the FSM is widely considered a legitimate religion, even by its opponents – mostly fundamentalist Christians, who have accepted that our God has larger balls than theirs”, the site reads. “But that’s not to say it’s True, only that it has Value”, said the church’s website, which veers from the silly to the serious.
The Washington Times reported that after filing an administrative appeal, Pastafarian Lindsay Miller was eventually permitted to wear the pasta strainer for her driver’s license that was issued to her on Thursday.
Miller says wearing the spaghetti strainer allows her to express her beliefs, like other religions are allowed to do. Therefore, Lindsay Miller appealed the decision and has won the right to wear the colander on her head for her driver’s license photo, according to My Fox Boston on Friday.
“I haven’t had an ID for quite a few months, and that’s kind of been a problem on certain things, so I’m glad I don’t have to wait any longer”, Miller said. He wanted to protest the decision of the board’s decision for permitting the teaching intelligent design as alternatives for evolution in science classes in public schools which suggested that students needed to get multiple viewpoints of how the universe came into existence which included an idea that it was created by the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
