Woman charged in Oklahoma State homecoming parade crash
Adacia Chambers, a 25-year-old woman from Stillwater, Okla., is accused of running a red light and deliberately driving around a barricade and over a police motorcycle before her vehicle struck spectators, including a number of children, watching the parade.
Chambers’ lawyer also said her psychiatric evaluation showed she is psychotic and in immediate need of treatment.
“Based upon statements made by Ms. Chambers, I have serious concerns about her risk for self-injury and harming others if released without treatment”, Roberson wrote in the report obtained by the newspaper.
Police didn’t reveal what the notes stated. She’s been held in the Payne County Jail on $1 million bond.
The crash killed two-year-old Nash Lucas, Nikita Nakal, a 23-year-old MBA student from India at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, and married couple Bonnie and Marvin Stone, both 65, of Stillwater. “Her emotional state ranged from uncontrollable sobbing to inappropriate, hysterical laughter”.
Coleman previously said that while speaking with Chambers in jail after the crash, he “was not satisfied at all that I was communicating with a competent individual”. I wanted to soak it in so I chose not to sleep. She asked “Is it because of something I didn’t do or did do?” Chambers then began crying hysterically, explaining that she missed Jesus, Roberson said.
The letter states that Chambers’ speech had a normal rate and volume. Her family also said Chambers spent time in mental health facilities a few years before she moved to Stillwater. In the request, prosecutors said the order is necessary to prevent “irreparable damage from pre-trial publicity”.
Tuesday evening, more than 2000 people gathered at Gallagher-Iba Arena on the OSU campus in Stillwater to honor those lost and injured in the OSU Homecoming crash.
During the ceremony, OSU President Burns Hargis said the university is uniquely equipped to deal with tragedy.
“May we always learn from our sorrow, and particularly tonight”, he said.
