Woman completes record-breaking swim to Golden Gate Bridge
In this October. 1, 2014 photo, Kim Chambers gets ready to swim at the wharf in San Francisco, Calif. Chambers became the first woman to swim the 30-mile stretch from the Farallon Islands to the Golden Gate Bridge.
Last week, Chambers’ friend Simon Dominguez was forced to stop his attempt to become the first person to finish a swim from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Farallones after a shark was spotted nearby.
Chambers is originally from New Zealand and her mother flew in to be in the boat that followed behind her throughout the arduous swim, which began at 11:30 p.m. Friday night. “I hope I can just inspire young women to dream big”.
“People think I’m insane because there are sharks but that’s why I’m doing it”.
The waters around the Farallones are notorious for the great white sharks, who are attracted by the elephant seals who live on the rocky islands.
“That’s their habitat and they should be there”.
It was in 2007 when after an accident, Chambers almost suffered an amputated leg and had to spend the next two years in recovery with a one per cent chance of walking again, reported Hello Giggles.
