Woman crash lands plane after pilot falls unconscious
It’s a situation straight out of a Hollywood movie: A husband takes his wife up for a spin in a small, micro-light aircraft then loses consciousness in the middle of the flight, leaving the woman – who has zero piloting experience – to try to land the plane.
The woman suffered serious burns and multiple bruises but medical staff said that her life was not at risk.
Her husband unfortunately died, but it is not clear whether this happened before or after landing.
Another light aircraft and a helicopter were dispatched to help guide the woman to the airport; she ended up crashing the plane near Seville Airport in Southwestern Spain.
A recording of a conversation between the air traffic controller and the woman shows the controller reassuring the woman, saying to: “The plane can fly without any problem”.
The woman could barely read a compass so the controller had to also tell her what to look for to find out the plane’s altitude. “She did not know how to fly, so they guided her from the control tower to see if she could control the plane until landing it at the airport”, he added. She finally managed to realize management of the aircraft with the assistance of the air visitors controller, who was hailed by a spokesman for the Spanish air visitors controllers union.
When the lady realised her husband was unconscious she referred to as a pal who alerted air visitors management, based on officers.
The Seville airport was closed from 1:20 to 3 pm local time on Monday while the midair drama played out.
