Woman donates toy store stock to homeless group
She added that added that she plans to visit at least one of the shelters when her donated toys wind up in the hands of children who are sure to appreciate them.
Every year, Carol Suchman donates toys to a few of NY City’s poorest children.
Ms. Suchman saw that the shop was closing down, but was still full of toys, so she negotiated a price with the owners for the entire stock.
A NY philanthropist will land on Santa’s nice list this year after she bought out an entire toy store for kids in need.
“When I saw this toy store, I just realized I could just do it on a grander scale for this one year”, Suchman told NY1. More specifically, she bought everything in it to give to the homeless.
By store, she means thousands of toys and stuffed animals, and boxes of school supplies. “I’ve been doing this for many years and we have many generous sponsors”, Rodriquez says. “And people do toy drives and do a lot of giving”.
Suchman told CBS MoneyWatch that she often buys birthday gifts for children in the foster system, and so always is on the lookout for toy stores.
“There will definitely be a lot of smiles and happy kids when they get these toys”, Ms. Suchman said.
With additional assistance from Liz Hopfan, the executive director of the Free Arts NYC nonprofit children’s program, and Antonio Rodriguez, the special-events coordinator for the city’s Department of Homeless Services, Suchman made her vision to donate thousands of toys to local homeless shelters a reality.
