Woman fights back at online trolls after makeover photo goes viral
While Dreigh’s work was praised, others used the photos as an opportunity to mock VanPevenage with a plethora of nasty memes.
However, things then took a turn, with comments like “this is why you should always take a girl swimming on the first date”.
The photo quickly spread across social media, along with vile bullying messages such as: “I’ll spend time with her as long as I never have to see her before 10am”.
The Internet had a lot to say about her beauty transformation, with one person commenting they didn’t believe the photos were of the same person.
Then, she explains how she overcame that and we want to crawl through our computer screens and give her a giant hug for the awesome inspiration she shared. The student posted the meme on Twitter with the caption, “I don’t understand how people can do this and I can’t figure out how to hide a single pimple on my face”.
Months later, VanPevenage is finally responding to what the Internet hath wrought of her vulnerable yet ultimately happy moment – and reminding everyone who’s been subjected to the same scrutiny that staying confident in your own appearance is key. “But when it’s actually you and you’re dealing with all the harsh comments, it’s a whole different story”.
“I think it’s very bad that people type hateful things without even thinking if it will hurt anybody”, she said in an email to The Huffington Post Thursday. I didn’t like going out in public without make-up or without my hair done’.
“Some days I will read through the comments and just see how cruel people can be”, VanPevenage said in her YouTube video. Everyone should feel lovely in their natural skin.
The woman admitted in her response video that she was once fond of memes until the joke was on her. Soon after, she was forced to experience all of the negative comments that came with her accidental fame.
Well said and we absolutely agree.
