Woman Gives Birth And Abandons Child In Subway Bathroom
West Covina Police have arrested a woman after she abandoned the baby she had just given birth to in a California Subway restaurant.
A woman was taken into custody after police say she allegedly gave birth in the restroom of a California restaurant and left the baby in a toilet.
The baby, a boy thought to be full term, was initially in critical condition because of low body temperature, but by Tuesday afternoon was said to be doing good.
Mary Grace Trinidad, 38, was found behind a nearby auto parts store in the eastern Los Angeles suburb, police spokesman Rudy Lopez said.
A customer heard a baby crying in the bathroom and alerted one of the Subway employees.
“We tried to keep her in and she just walked out”, a female employee told a dispatcher.
Surveillance video shows Trinidad enter the bathroom at 8:07 a.m. and exit it at 8:17 a.m.
The child was found crying, upright and half-submerged in the water, Lopez told reporters.
She re-emerges at 8.17am, and a concerned employee follows her out to the door. She was taken to the hospital for medical treatment.
She was also wanted for an unrelated narcotics offense, Lopez said. Her bail was set at $2 million – she is unlikely to be released from jail before her hearing on attempted murder and child abandonment charges. An 80 percent decrease in babies found, dead or alive, after their mothers simply left them at will in any unattended location of their choosing, has been realized since 2011. In Los Angeles County, newborns may be surrendered at any hospital or fire station.
