Woman killed in police chase after drone spotted near prison
The chase ensued in the early hours of Tuesday morning after a couple were reportedly attempting to fly a drone into the grounds of Wandsworth prison.
Scotland Yard said police were called to a road near the jail just after 3am on Tuesday morning, to investigate reports of a drone being flown near the prison grounds. A man is in hospital in a critical condition.
The Metropolitan Police said the officers “followed” the auto, in which the woman was a passenger, before the vehicle collided with a house off Wandsworth Bridge Road.
An anonymous witness said the vehicle hit six bollards and two fences and was on fire when emergency services arrived.
The occupant of the vehicle, a female in her 20s, died at the scene.
Witness, Tony Plummer, whose front wall was smashed by the vehicle, told The Evening Standard: “I went into the front room and there was glass everywhere”.
“You could hear the driver screaming out her name and the police were telling him not to move. Eventually they took away a body bag”. She loved kids more than anything.
A spokesman for the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said: “The Metropolitan Police referred the matter to the IPCC because a police vehicle was following the auto involved in the collision immediately prior to the incident”.
“The Metropolitan Police referred the matter to the IPCC because a police vehicle was following the auto involved in the collision immediately prior to the incident”. Reportedly a drone was found in the wreckage of the auto the couple were driving.
IPCC investigators came to the scene to oversee the evidence gathering and interviewed officers about their involvement.
The Metropolitan police declined to confirm Smith’s identity when contacted by the Guardian and said it could not comment further on the incident. The investigation is in its early stages’.
