Woman shot by police to face arson and assault charges
As a woman recovers in the hospital after being shot by a D.C. police officer, the city’s police union is offering reaction to cellphone video that was taken from the scene.
She has been charged with assault on a police officer, assault with a deadly weapon and arson. Police spokeswoman Gwendolyn Crump says Nettles has been charged with arson for allegedly beginning a fireplace in a northeast Washington house that originally introduced police to the scene the place she was shot early Saturday night.
Renita Nettles was waving a knife just a few feet away from the officer in Washington DC, in the USA.
The officer then fires once, hitting Nettles in the shoulder.
Police did not provide an update on Nettles’ condition, but she was expected to survive her gunshot wound.
A short video of the event posted on YouTube shows the officer pointing his weapon at the woman as she slowly advances toward him. Her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
Police were initially called to the low-income housing community where Nettles was shot to help firefighters who were battling a blaze at a home there.
