Women don’t get to play on big courts, claims Wozniacki
The 24-year-old was speaking after being knocked out by Spain’s Garbine Muguruza 6-4, 6-4 in their fourth round match on Court Two.
After speaking very eloquently about what she felt was the lack of opportunities given to female stars to play on the show courts she was asked about her ex- fiancée Rory McIlroy’s injury.
With no tennis played on Middle Sunday, all last 16 matches of both the men and women were played yesterday with the ladies all scheduled early on six different courts so they could have the maximum time possible to rest before returning for the quarter-finals today.
Caroline Wozniacki says ex-fiance Rory McIlroy is a distant memory after insisting she “moved on a long time ago” from the world No 1 golfer.
Colombia-born Muguruza knocked Serena Williams out of last year’s French Open but has always struggled at Wimbledon, with her only previous victory in two visits coming against Britain’s Anne Keothavong in 2013.
And he believes the roaring home crowd can make the difference in his quest for a second title at the All England Club. The 21-year-old Muguruza had already achieved her best result here by making the last 16.
“Obviously she played well”.
She is the first Spaniard into the women’s quarter-finals here since Conchita Martinez in 2001 and will face the Swiss Timea Bacsinszky, who beat Romania’s Monica Niculescu 1-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Danish player Wozniacki has been a runner-up twice at the USA Open and is puzzled by her Wimbledon record.
“I knew that Garbine was going to be tough”.
Wozniacki is also close friend of world number one Serena Williams, who tackles sister Venus in the fourth round on Monday.
She added that her appearance on a big court has not necessarily helped her: “I get to the fourth round quite often (at Wimbledon)”.
And Victoria Azarenka joined her in the quarters with a 6-2 6-3 win over Belinda Bencic.
There is a large experience gap between the players for this match, with Wozniacki having participated in eight Wimbledon tournaments however it is by far her worst grand slam.
