Woodhead scores 4 TDs in San Diego’s possible National Football League finale
No one knows if this was the last Chargers game in San Diego after 55 seasons.
The Dolphins’ defense held the Chargers to just seven points in the second half but by that point the damage was already done.
The Bolts winning big made things a lot easier to deal with for crowd at The Q, a group that was, for one of the rare occasions this season, mostly pro-Chargers. Many Chargers returned to the field after the game to sign autographs and mingle with the fans, possibly one last time. Phillip Rivers has been a class act and after listening to his post game press conference, it even sounded like he would be torn apart leaving the city he’s been the quarterback of his entire professional career. Philip Rivers threw the football for 311 yards and three touchdowns in what is likely the Chargers’ final game at Qualcomm Stadium before relocation to Los Angeles. “We get so caught up in what we do you forget how many people are involved – the fans, the people that have been part of the stadium that make all these memories we have”. “We have to go out and play as professionals and men”. There was an obvious anxiety about the fanbase as they ordered their pancakes and trash talked with the sprinkled Miami fans. In fact, there was a stark reminder of that less than 24 hours after that victory, when all Chargers-related logos were removed from the field, as shared by Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Rumors continue to swirl about the future of the Chargers in San Diego. “We used it for energy and hopefully we gave them something to cheer about”. “The later they bring in personnel, you identify it, then the later the call comes in so there was a little bit of confusion”.
“I’m disappointed, frustrated, upset, mad, angry – any adjective you can think of right now”, Tannehill said.
Woodhead’s rushing touchdown was the first rushing score since Week One, when Woodhead ran it in the end zone twice for the Chargers.
Added interim coach Dan Campbell: “We just couldn’t ever establish the run game”. Chairman Dean Spanos, whose family has owned the team since 1984, has sought to move the team to Los Angeles, to the extent of breaking off negotiations with San Diego officials this past summer.
The Chargers (4-10) have gone as far as to partner with their hated rival, the Oakland Raiders, in proposing to build a stadium on the site of a former toxic waste dump in Carson. “To come out and play like this on both sides of the ball is unacceptable in every sense of the word”.
Jay Ajayi scored on a 12-yard run in the third quarter and Tannehill had a 1-yard keeper late in the fourth.
FAREWELL TO FLOYD: In the fourth quarter, the Chargers played a video tribute to Floyd, who’s retiring after 12 seasons in San Diego. Rivers tried to get Floyd a TD pass but was intercepted at the 1 by Brent Grimes.
