Woods commits to at least one more week of 2015 season
Tiger Woods, only looking for improvement?
“I hit it good enough to be where I needed to be, but I putted terrible”, said Woods, who was 17th in the Masters in April but is a combined 22 over par for this year’s major championships. He hinted at a golf course design opportunity in India.
“What Tiger needs to do is take a break”, said Diaz. With 14 major wins under his belt and the fact he had never lost a major when leading after 54 holes, the American was firm favourite to go on and complete the job.
With easier scoring conditions at Whistling Straits on Friday, there was the possibility that Woods could string some birdies together, shoot an under-par number, and make the cut for the first time in three majors. With Woods these days we look for the tiniest rays of hope. His agent, Mark Steinberg, however, said Woods, who would need no worse than a finish of second next week to make the playoffs, wasn’t 100% sure he’d play next week but gave himself the option by committing, which is a player’s right. I don’t have the energy to go through it all again.
Though there have been episodic glimpses of form this summer, at the Greenbrier Classic and the Quicken Loans National, where at each he shot three rounds in the 60s, it has not transferred to the deeper fields of the major environs.
Woods has missed the playoffs in two of the last four years but won FedEx Cup titles in 2007 and 2009.
“I’m pleased at the way I’m starting to hit the golf ball”.
“I finally figured something out today on the putting green, but the damage had already been done”, added Woods, who was in danger of missing the cut after his three-over 75 in the opening round. “Finally rolled the ball coming in, and unfortunately it was a too little too late”.
Which is why the development at Whistling Straits in the PGA Championship is bad news for New Jersey and, especially, for The Barclays. He played well here in 2010 and is the defending champion of the PGA Championship, so to think he’s not at least going to contend, I think would be foolish.
He even claimed, “the confidence is growing quickly. No, it’s not really about the season, it’s about the year”.
From his battle at year’s start with serious chipping woes, to a back issue at the Farmers Insurance Open, there have been few bright moments to build upon, but Woods is seizing on what he says he’s feeling.
“That’s the fun part”, he said. Then there’s the tournament he hosts and for which he received an exemption, the no-cut Hero World Challenge in December.
“Well, I hit it great today, but I made actually nothing”, the 39-year-old said after carding five bogeys and two birdies on a morning when 25 players dipped below par.
But such is the way of things in the first-world territory of major golf, you would not have known so much as a slate had come loose. “I’m not just saying the (biggest) Wyndham Championship, I’m talking about the history of our golf tournament”.
