Woods frustrated after missed cut at Torrey Pines
The field of 155 will be reduced to the low 70 plus ties at the conclusion of Friday’s play.
Woods started his round with a bogey, then had eight consecutive pars. That’s when we first got a real glimpse of his fallibility, even though he rallied to beat Rocco Mediate in a 19-hole playoff.
Said Woods: “We’re going to go to some better greens tomorrow (Fri), better conditions and hopefully, not only myself but the rest of the guys, can put some good numbers up tomorrow”. That’s where eventually I want everything coming together. “More playing time. That’s what I’m trying to do”.
“That’s what (caddie) Joey (LaCava) kept telling me all day today: ‘Just be patient with it,”‘ said Woods. He bogeyed five of his next six holes – including a double-bogey on the 15th hole.
More surprising is the absence of Woods’ playing partners Thursday and Friday, Jason Day (74) and Dustin Johnson (74), the world’s No. 1 and No. 3 players.
Fired-up members of the gallery spoke often, too, yelling things like “this is your course!” and “it’s good to have you back!” and “I’ve been waiting since ’08!” in his direction. His previous high score was 73 at the 2015 Waste Management Phoenix Open.
“I’m pretty pleased to be in contention as the last couple weeks haven’t been fantastic”, said Senden. “Didn’t really hit it that good”. I hit it better.
“Flying out here was something I hadn’t done in a while, ” he said. “Not used to doing that”. This two-day stretch will simply be the foundation for how we talk about him in the near (and distant) future.
While some critics feel that Woods still needs to make technical adjustments to his swing after being sidelined by back pain and spine surgery, the 41-year-old dwelt on the positives after shooting a level-par 72 in the second round at Torrey Pines outside San Diego.
The former world number one has undergone two back operations since his last regular tour appearance in August 2015.
Woods has won the tournament seven times, most recently in 2013.
The event is being held at the Torrey Pines course, where Woods “cemented his legend” by winning the 2008 US Open on one leg.
But as Woods returned to official PGA Tour competition Thursday at the Farmers Insurance Open, it seemed like the fate of the tour and Woods himself was hanging on the result of each hole, perhaps each shot.

And now, they’re all gone, the marque trio at the Farmers Insurance Open falling off the marque altogether.
Woods did pick up a second birdie at the long fifth, but the muted applause when he finished with a par five on the ninth told its own story. Both missed the cut.
“If you’re not sharp and not striking it well, it’s a hard place to play, ” Mickelson said. “None of us got anything going”.
