Woods gives CBS a ratings lift at Wyndham Championship
“I saw one of the photos and I looked totally different”, she said upon seeing images of that first win in 2012. But he had only one birdie during his first 10 holes, dropping way off the pace with triple bogey on the par-4 11th.
The former world number one also bogeyed the next but recovered with four birdies to card a level-par round of 70 and finished four shots adrift of Love on 13 under.
It was the 21st career win of Love’s career and his first since 2008. “Rarely does it come to fruition like this: The absolute best-case scenario when Woods decided…to make his first appearance at the tournament”. Last year’s U.S. Ryder Cup task force thrust him back into the role of captain for next year’s matches and he was appointed for another term on the Tour’s policy board earlier this year. He is second to the great Sam Snead, who has 82 wins. Love said he jokes with Singh about when they’ll shift to the Champions Tour.
And when he made the turn, he was three strokes behind co-leaders Gore and Brown – his playing partner.
“He said that’s the first one he’s ever written on the scorecard, so that’s pretty cool”, Brown said of Woods, noting that players keep their opponents’ scores.
Webb Simpson, Bill Haas, Carl Pettersson and Brooks Koepka were tied at 14-fewer than 266.
Another sellout crowd of more than 30,000 turned out Sunday at Sedgefield, but the atmosphere was somewhat subdued.
Woods wasn’t doing anything. Woods was wearing his victory-red Sunday golf shirt, once one of the most feared sights in golf but now just a reminder of what once was.
“Tiger, thanks for coming to Greensboro”, the fan yelled as Woods walked off the green. OK, but what about simple pitch shots? Other players do not see him as a threat like they used to and Tiger can’t dominate because of that. While there was plenty of a negative in 2015 for Tiger Woods, he ended it on a high note. It’s also up 160 percent over last year’s final round when Camilo Villegas won. The wait will continue. He smashed his birdie putt nearly six-feet past, and then missed the return.
“Incredible” was Love’s verdict on the win, achieved with a six-under par final round of 64 that included eagles at both of Sedgefield’s two part-fives. Just like that he was 16-under and in the lead.
He became the third-oldest victor in PGA Tour history, finishing at 17-under 263.
In the past, that “and everything else” would get a noticeable bump-sometimes into the “major championship ratings” category whenever the name Tiger Woods was near the top of the leaderboard. It was another little tip that helped.
“Contrary to popular belief”, Gore quipped, “I’m still a good golfer”.
Kizzire closed with his second straight 7-under 64 to finish at 20-under 264 at Fox Den, four strokes ahead of South Korea’s Si Woo Kim and Canada’s Brad Fritsch.
Gore, the third-round leader, shot 69.
“I was trying to shoot 7 under in my mind, get back in the mix, and to shoot 9 (under) was definitely something I wasn’t expecting on the range this morning, but great to get it”, Snedeker said.
