Woods keeping positive despite missed cut
Woods – who had to complete the final five holes of his second round on Saturday because Friday’s play was suspended due to unsafe weather – finished 4-over par, two shots on the wrong side of the 2-over-par cut. “I finally rolled the ball coming in and unfortunately it was a little too late”.
His tie for 17th at the Masters remains the brightest spot in his season, and Woods says he has yet to get all aspects of his game firing at once.
Woods entered the tournament before the deadline last Friday but, after missing the cut at the PGA Championship in Wisconsin the following day, he was non-committal.
A win would guarantee Woods a spot in the first leg of the four-tournament playoffs, although a solo second finish could be enough to elevate him into the top 125 players eligible for the postseason.
“I still have plenty of golf to play for the rest of the year, and as I said, on a global level”. “Actually I’ll go to my sports bar, how about that?” he said, referring to the restaurant in Jupiter that he opened this week. But just a couple hours after the PGA Tour announced that its biggest moneymaker would play in Greensboro for the first time, his agent, Mark Steinberg, pumped the brakes. Hopefully I can win it and get in the playoffs and start playing a bunch of golf.
“This is fun. We play hardly any golf courses anymore in the States that I get (to use) my two-iron”.
“The confidence is growing quickly”, Woods assured. And no one has ever won the three U.S. majors in the same year.
It’s gotten to the point where Tiger Woods seems OK with missing three straight cuts in the majors for the first time in his career.
Matt Jones, a 35-year-old journeyman from Australia, took his score to 11 under par over the closing six holes to lead by two at the halfway stage from Jason Day, with Justin Rose one further back.
Although he had decided, Woods could afford remain guaranteed out and definitely not play. “It was not appropriate to confirm during the PGA Championship“.
To his continuing enormous credit Woods entertained a dozen questions after his round, but he looked exhausted and thoroughly fed-up.
The fallen world number one missed the cut at last week’s PGA Championship at Whistling Straits, the third time this year he has failed to go beyond the halfway stage at a Major tournament. “But I’m trying to be patient, and rounds like these help because I see how close I am to finally being at my best”. “And to have the control I need to have going forward, it’s starting to come back, which is nice”.
If you woke up this morning wondering why it felt like it’s been so long since you’ve seen Tiger Woods playing on a Saturday, it’s because he hasn’t been around to do so.
