Woods misses another major cut
“And I still have plenty of golf to be played for the rest of the year on a global level”.
You might believe Tiger Woods is lost.
Woods entered the Greensboro event on Friday, but after causing frenzied excitement at the unfashionable event, it emerged that the 14-time major-winner may opt against it. Woods, who would need to finish in the top two to qualify for the end-of-campaign FedEx Cup play-offs, is expected to announce his decision on Monday.
“I’m just going to sit back and I’ll go through with my team”, he said. “And that’s why this tournament is important to me”.
“I’d be the first one to congratulate him because I know the golf you have to play to get to that spot, and it has been impressive this year”.
The fallen former world No. 1 missed the cut at last week’s PGA Championship at Whistling Straits, the third time this year he has failed to go beyond the halfway stage at a Major tournament.
Tiger Woods will be teeing it up with Los Angeles Clippers star Chris Paul at the Wyndham Championship pro-am on Wednesday.
And now he wants to stick around for a while.
Mathematically, he would have to finish alone in second at the Wyndham to get into the playoffs and extend his season.
Woods said it was building, and that he found a key to his putting Saturday morning “but the damage had already been done”.
Woods is not the only player hoping to regroup this week. There was some gallows humour about being back in Florida in time to watch the PGA Championship leaders tee off from his new sports bar, Woods Jupiter, and a fearless face despite the lack of evidence to support his unremitting optimism. “Balls are plugging. Lot of mud balls out there”.
Woods likely would have to win the Wyndham, which awards 300 FedEx Cup points to the victor, to elevate himself from his current 186th position to the required top-125 to get into the first playoff event.
What’s in question next is if Woods will actually play in next week’s Wyndham Championship. Only the top 125 players reach the playoffs. A 14th-place tie helped him jump from No. 126 to No. 120.
“Well, I hit it good enough to be where I needed to be, but I putted bad”, said Woods, who had five holes remaining when play resumed and played them even with a bogey and a birdie. Those players are Adam Scott, McIlroy and now Spieth. Thomas is playing some of his more consistent golf as of late and has made the cut in 19 of his 26 events played.
Asked what adjustment he had made to improve his putting on the beautifully manicured greens at Whistling Straits, the 39-year-old replied: “Just my set-up”. You can tell how passionate the local people and everyone involved in the tournament here are about this tournament, and it means such a great deal to them to have Tiger Woods in the field.
