Woody Allen Explains His ‘Paternal’ Relationship with Wife Soon-Yi
“She flourished. It was just a good luck thing”, added Woody. In a statement released to Newsweek in 1992, written when she was 21 years old, Previn was pretty adamant that she didn’t want her relationship with Allen characterized by his paternalism.
Allen has been married to Soon-Yi Previn for 20 years, but their relationship began when he was still involved with her adopted mother, Mia Farrow (Soon-Yi’s father is Farrow’s ex-husband Andre Previn).
“It wouldn’t be serious, but it had a life of its own”, he said.
I think some of them are wonderful, but they are so many of them that are not. The age difference, he said, seemed to work out in the couple’s favor. It’s like the trace vitamin not being in your body. You and I could be standing over [William] Shakespeare’s grave, singing his praises, and it doesn’t mean a thing.
Woody Allen’s marriage to Soon-Yi Previn works because she “responded to someone paternal”.
Oh, and there’s also those decade long allegations that the 79-year-old molested his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow.
People always ask me this now that I’m turning 80, but I don’t really care. If the movie is good, viewers flock to see it, and if it’s not good, then they don’t, he admitted. I was one of the few guys rooting for the comet to hit the Earth. Great. “…As I got older and [saw that women] were humans suffering like I was…”
If you just can’t stand to hear another story about disgraced comedian Bill Cosby, try casting your mind back to a time when the object of much similar scorn was director/actor/writer Woody Allen. “I love music, but I don’t have to work at it…” I was selfish and I was ambitious and insensitive to the women that I dated. Not cruel or nasty, but not sufficiently sensitive…
“I didn’t find any moral dilemmas whatsoever”, the screenwriter told Time magazine. I never had any dealings with him. I can barely bring myself to take two Extra Strength Excedrin.
Did that, you know, affect how people perceived your movies, Woody? But I’m not a curious person. ‘Woody started taking her to basketball games, and Mia would reportedly tell her to stop dressing up for them as if she were going to a disco.’. I don’t enjoy that.
The rest of the interview was full of interesting and amusing tidbits, like the fact that he doesn’t own a computer, has never taken a puff of marijuana in his life and ate dinner at the same restaurant on New York’s Upper East Side for “10 [to] 12 years”. I’m not interested in technology.
“I lucked out in my last relationship”, he said of Previn, whom he publicly started dating when she was in her early twenties, and married in 1997 when she was 27.
