Worker killed, another hurt at new Vikings stadium site
One worker was killed and another injured after falling during construction Wednesday morning on the roof at the new Minnesota Vikings stadium.
According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, one person died and another injured in the accident.
John Wood, a vice president for Mortenson Construction, is the general contractor for the building and he confirmed the details of the horrific incident, though he kept the specifics at a minimum.
Just before 8:30 a.m., the department said they had stabilized the victim on the roof in order to bring them down and be transported to the hospital. But Wood said the second man didn’t fall, as was previously reported.
Work on the project was stopped for the day. “The proximity to this hospital obviously ensures that we get immediate response”.
The extent of the surviving worker’s injuries was unclear.
As construction workers filed out of the site several indicated that one of their colleagues had died, according to the Tribune.
Neither worker was identified, pending notification of their families.
Crews used a rescue basket, ropes and cables to free the trapped person. The department did not describe the nature of either person’s injuries.
Work on the site has been halted for the rest of the day and the Vikings released a statement on the incident. The $1 billion stadium in downtown Minneapolis will also host the 2018 Super Bowl.
